The FAA has awarded a grant to the Greene County Regional Airport Authority to accomplish Phase I of the Runway Extension Project. The project was conceived to lengthen the existing runway to 4500 feet and provide a new run-up pad, as well as taxiway lighting and a PAPI for Runway 7. A key element is the improvement in the level of safety that will result from providing 300-foot long clear and level runway safety areas at each end of the runway as well as tunneling Valley Road under the new runway extension. Phase I included building the new tunnel and airport access road (Dumford Road) and was completed in Dec 2003. Phase II includes the actual runway extension and new taxiway and was completed mid-summer of 2005.

The FAA awarded a grant to lower the high tension power lines located about a mile to the east of the current Runway 7 threshold. They were lowered to safely provide a 34:1 gradient from 500 feet east of the new Runway 7 threshold necessary for non-precision approaches. This part of the project was completed December 2004. |
